Gambling should be entertainment you can afford, not a way to make money. Here's how to keep it that way, and who to call if it isn't.

Where Who Contact
Singapore National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) helpline, 8am–11pm daily 1800-6-668-668 · ncpg.org.sg
Malaysia Befrienders KL, emotional support, 24 hours 03-7627 2929 · befrienders.org.my

Both are free and confidential. If you are in immediate danger, call emergency services: 999 in Malaysia, or 999 (police) / 995 (ambulance) in Singapore.

Keep it under control

  • Set a budget before you start, and treat it as the cost of entertainment. Don’t top it up.
  • Set a time limit. Stop when it’s up, whether you’re winning or losing.
  • Never chase losses. Betting more to win back what you lost is the fastest way to lose more.
  • Don’t gamble with money you need for rent, bills, food or debt repayments, and never borrow to gamble.
  • Don’t gamble when you’re upset, stressed or drinking.
  • Bonuses don’t change the odds. The house always has an edge. See how bonuses work.

Warning signs

Talk to someone if you notice any of these:

  • Spending more money or time than you planned, more and more often.
  • Hiding your gambling from family or friends.
  • Borrowing money or selling things to gamble.
  • Feeling anxious or irritable when you can’t gamble.
  • Gambling to escape problems or low moods.

Taking a break

Most casinos let you set deposit limits or close your account for a period (self-exclusion). Ask the casino’s support team. In Singapore, NCPG runs exclusion schemes that you, or your family, can apply for.
